Women's basketball prepares to face Colgate

The Holy Cross women's basketball team will hit the road to face Colgate on Saturday, Feb. 1. Tipoff in Hamilton, N.Y. is set for 2 p.m.

The matchup will feature the league's top two offenses: Colgate averages 68.7 points per game, while the Crusaders average 67.2 points per contest. Additionally, the league's top two scorers – Holy Cross senior Lauren Manis (18.3 points per game) and Colgate senior Rachel Thompson (16.9 points per game) will face each other for the first time this season.

With conference records at 6-3, Crusaders and Raiders sit in a three-way tie for second place in the Patriot League standings, along with Lafayette.

Things to Know About the Crusaders (13-7, 6-3 Patriot League):
  • Holy Cross pulled away late to earn a 57-43 victory over Navy at home on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Leading only by a score of 20-17 at halftime, the Crusaders outscored the Midshipmen by a 37-26 margin in the second half.
  • With 18 points and 10 rebounds against Navy, Manis had her 14th double-double of the year. That season total ranks second in Division I, trailing only Unique Thompson of Auburn, who has 18 double-doubles this year.
  • Sophomore Avery LaBarbera scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds against Navy – she has scored in double figures in 17 of 20 games this season, tied with Manis for the most double-figure games on the team.
  • Senior Megan Swords had 12 points and nine rebounds. Swords continues to lead the Patriot League in field-goal percentage at 56.2 percent, which ranks 27th in Division I.
  • Holy Cross had 47 rebounds against Navy, matching a team high in Patriot League play this year. The Crusaders have out-rebounded all but one of their Patriot League opponents this season, and have grabbed 40 or more rebounds in 11 games this season.
Things to Know About the Raiders (14-6, 6-3 Patriot League):
  • The Raiders fell to Lafayette on the road by a score of 55-39 on Wednesday – Colgate's first loss this season when allowing fewer than 60 points.
  • In the loss, Alexa Brodie led the Raiders with nine points. Abby Schubiger had eight points and six rebounds.
  • In addition to ranking second in the Patriot League in scoring, Thompson ranks second in assists (4.9 per game), second in steals (2.4 per game) and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio.
  • Schubiger ranks second in the Patriot League in field-goal percentage at 53.2.
  • Colgate is undefeated at Cotterell Court this year, with a perfect 9-0 record at home. That record marks the best start to a home season in program history, and breaks the Division I era record for consecutive home victories.
Last Time They Met:
  • Holy Cross and Colgate split the season series in 2019, with each team taking a road victory.
  • The Raiders opened the 2019 conference slate with a 70-67 win over the Crusaders on Jan. 3. Nia Ahart hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 32 seconds to go in regulation to secure the victory for Colgate. Four Crusaders were in double figures in the loss: LaBarbera (17 points), Swords (13 points, 14 rebounds), senior Kathryn Pedi (12 points) and Manis (11 points, 12 rebounds).
  • At Colgate on March 2, the Crusaders took an 80-67 victory after outscoring the Raiders 23-4 in the first quarter. Manis led the way with a 24-point, 13-rebound showing. LaBarbera made six 3-pointers to tally 22 points, along with eight assists and five rebounds. Swords also finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, and senior Madalyn Smith notched 13 points.
