Women's basketball can't hold off BU

BOSTON – The Holy Cross women's basketball team couldn't hold off Boston University, falling in overtime by a score of 76-70 on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Senior Lauren Manis had a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Crusaders (12-7, 5-3 Patriot League). Senior Megan Swords chipped in 15 points and two blocks, while sophomore Avery LaBarbera finished with 12 points.

Maggie Pina had a 23-point showing for the Terriers (9-10, 4-4 Patriot League). Katie Nelson, who played all 45 minutes of the game, had 17 points, while Maren Durant posted a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross took an early 13-6 lead after a layup from Manis, forcing a BU timeout with 5:15 to go in the first quarter. LaBarbera had back-to-back driving layups to push the Crusaders' lead to 25-10 with 1:04 left in the frame.
  • The Crusaders led by as much as 18, 32-14, after LaBarbera hit another layup with 6:17 to go in the half. From there, BU went on a 17-6 run to end the first half, capped by a 3-pointer by Pina at the buzzer to cut the Holy Cross advantage to 38-31 at the half.
  • BU hit back-to-back threes to open the second half and cut within one point. Swords had a block to force a shot clock violation by the Terriers; she made a free throw before senior Madalyn Smith had a jumper and junior Jenay Faulkner drained a three to make it a seven-point game.
  • The Terriers stuck around, with Pina giving BU its first lead of the game, 47-46, with 2:18 to go in the third. Another jumper by Tenisha Pressley pushed that lead to 49-46 before Swords and LaBarbera had back-to-back layups to put Holy Cross back ahead, 50-49, entering the fourth quarter.
  • BU took a four-point lead, 61-57, with 3:33 to go in regulation. Swords made a free throw before Faulkner made a layup after a steal from LaBarbera. LaBarbera then put the Crusaders up, 62-61, with a layup of her own, and then drew a foul and sank both free throws with 30 seconds remaining.
  • The Terriers tied the game at 64-64 off a 3-pointer by Pina with 25 seconds remaining in regulation. The Crusaders could not get a shot up, forcing overtime, and BU outscored Holy Cross 12-6 in the extra frame to take the win.
