Women's basketball falls short against Bucknell

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team fell to Bucknell, 51-40, on Saturday, Jan. 11.

The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Crusaders (10-5), and also marked Holy Cross' first home and conference losses of the year. Senior Lauren Manis led the team in scoring with 15 points, while senior Megan Swords had 11 rebounds and eight points.

Bucknell (11-4, 4-0 Patriot League) remains undefeated in league play. Ellie Mack led the way with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Marly Walls also hit double figures with 13 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After the Crusaders took a 5-0 lead off five points from Manis, the Bison stormed ahead to take a 7-5 lead. The teams played tightly before Walls had a layup to extend Bucknell's lead to 24-16 with 4:54 to go in the second quarter.
  • HC cut within 26-22 after a layup from Manis with 2:04 left in the half, but that lead extended to nine points, 31-22, by halftime, after a 3-pointer from Walls and a layup at the buzzer by Autumn Ceppi.
  • Bucknell led by 14 after scoring five straight to open the third quarter. Senior Madalyn Smith hit a free throw, and freshman Addisyn Cross and junior Jenay Faulkner sank back-to-back 3s to cut the deficit to seven with 5:54 left in the third.
  • The Bison responded with back-to-back 3s of their own, and though the Crusaders cut back within eight, Bucknell immediately answered with a three from Mack to lead by 11.
  • Holy Cross held Bucknell to just six points in the final frame, and cut within seven points with 2:33 left, but the Crusaders could only score six points of their own in the fourth.

  • Manis has hit double-figure points in 13 of the team's 15 games this season.
  • Swords has reached double-figure rebounds six times in 2019-20.
