Mountain named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross senior tight end Derek Mountain has been selected as one of 185 semifinalists for the 2019 William V. Campbell Trophy presented by Mazda, as announced by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame. Mountain and the other 184 semifinalists make up the candidates for the 2019 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Class presented by Fidelity Investments. Each of the semifinalists is a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, with a grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, outstanding football ability as a starter or significant contributor, and strong leadership and citizenship skills.

“These 185 impressive candidates truly represent the scholar-athlete ideal,” said National Football Foundation chairman Archie Manning, whose sons Peyton and Eli were named NFF National Scholar-Athletes in 1997 and 2003, respectively. “For more than 60 years, the NFF National Scholar-Athlete program has showcased more than 800 college football players who have been successful on the football field, in the classroom and in the community. And we are excited to celebrate the 30th year of the William V. Campbell Trophy presented by Mazda, which honors the best of the best. This year's semifinalists further illustrate the power of our great sport in developing the next generation of influential leaders.”

From the group of 185 semifinalists, the NFF awards committee will select and announce 12-14 finalists on Oct. 30. Each finalist will be recognized as part of the 2019 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, receiving an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship. The Campbell Trophy winner, who will have his scholarship increased to $25,000, will be announced live at the NFF's annual awards dinner on Dec. 10. This year's postgraduate scholarships will push the program's all-time distribution to more than $11.7 million.

In three games played this season, Mountain ranks second on the team in receiving with 11 catches for 130 yards. Over the course of his collegiate career, he has caught 35 passes for 429 yards and five touchdowns.
