NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale's Kurt Rawlings accounted for 290 yards of total offense and two touchdowns, to lead the Bulldogs to a 23-10 victory over the Holy Cross football team at the Yale Bowl. The Crusaders fall to 1-2 on the year, while Yale starts the season 1-0.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring at the 11:13-mark of the first quarter on a two-yard touchdown run by Zane Dudek. The Crusaders trimmed the margin to 6-3 midway through the second quarter on a 34-yard field goal by sophomore placekicker Derek Ng.
In the third quarter, Yale increased its lead to 13-3 on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Rawlings to Caden Herring. Early in the fourth quarter, junior quarterback Connor Degenhardt hit junior wide receiver Tenio Ayeni with a 27-yard scoring strike to bring Holy Cross to within three (13-10). But Rawlings scored on a three-yard run on the Bulldogs' next possession, before Sam Tuckerman booted a 28-yard field goal to conclude the scoring.
Degenhardt hit on 10 of 27 passes for 145 yards, while freshman running back Jordan Forrest carried the ball five times for 64 yards. Freshman linebacker Jacob Dobbs led the defense with seven tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Holy Cross returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 28, when it travels to Syracuse for a 12:00 p.m. game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• Senior punter Cody Wilkinson averaged 48.6 yards on eight punts, to break the school single-game record for punting average (minimum five attempts).
• The Crusaders finished the game with 237 total yards and 11 first downs, while Yale was able to total 507 yards and 24 first downs.
• The Bulldogs improve to 29-5 all-time against Holy Cross with the victory.
