WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross field hockey team fell to Boston University, 5-4, Saturday afternoon in a tightly contested game at Hart Turf Field on Senior Day.
The Terriers (5-10, 2-3 PL) would strike first when Jodie Connolly got her first of three on the day off a corner in the first quarter. The Crusaders (6-9, 2-3 PL) would battle back and take the lead in the second off of goals from a nice individual effort from
Sinead Walsh and
Lexi Tilton's fourth of the year with an assist from
Olivia Venezia. Holy Cross would go into the half up, 2-1.
Both teams scored twice in the third frame with the Crusaders'
Minke Koomen and
Philomena Fitzgerald linking up for the first, and
Madeline Alderfer taking the insert from
Lily Watson and beating the BU goalie through her five hole for the second. At the end of three, Holy Cross led, 4-3.
The Terriers would take control in the fourth scoring two unanswered goals. The game-winner came at the end of a sequence which saw BU earn four corners back-to-back.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Koomen's goal was her team-leading eighth of the season. Tilton scored her first goal since her hat-trick against Merrimack.
- Playoff qualification will now come down to next week's games with Holy Cross taking on Bucknell and BU facing Lehigh. If the Crusaders win and the Terriers lose, Holy Cross will qualify. If both teams win, it could potentially come down to a long list of tiebreakers.
