WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's soccer team defeated Navy, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. On the back of Kelly Crowley's header in the 20th minute and a great defensive showing by the Crusaders, Holy Cross secured a crucial three points in league play in its first Patriot League win of the season.

The Crusaders improve to 3-2-7 on the year and 1-0-4 in conference action, extending their unbeaten streak to ten games. The Midshipmen fall to 11-2-1 and 3-1-1, while they also saw their own 11-game unbeaten streak snapped by Holy Cross.

In the 20th minute, Mariah Brown, who scored off a corner in the Crusaders' previous game, was the distributor this time around as she took a corner that Crowley was able to get her head to and send into the corner of the net. Holy Cross would end the first half after allowing the Mids to take just one shot, putting none on goal.

Navy picked up the pressure in the second half registering six shots in the frame, three on goal, but Sophia Lettieri was able to stop all of them. Holy Cross almost made it 2-0 when, with 15 minutes to play, Carly Flahive made a great effort play to keep a ball inbounds inside Navy's penalty box. She worked it back towards the middle of the field and sent a cross in that just missed the outstretched foot of Katie Quinn.

The Mids' best chance came in the 86th minute when they were awarded a free kick just outside the 18. Baseley McClaskey curled the ball around the Crusaders' wall, but Lettieri was there just in time for the impressive save.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The victory was Holy Cross' first over Navy since 2000.
  • Crowley's goal was her second of the year and she now leads the team with seven points.
  • Lettieri picked up her fifth shutout of the season and saw her save percentage improve to .820.

UP NEXT:

The Crusaders are back at it next Saturday, Oct. 19, when they travel to Lehigh for a 1 p.m. matchup.
