The Lead: Matt Rees had three goals for the Midshipmen as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Navy, 11-4, on Sunday in Patriot League action. Senior Jon Vogel led the Crusaders with two goals and an assist for three points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead with 13:10 left in the first quarter when Vogel found the back of the net off an assist from senior Sean Kirkpatrick on a man-up goal.
- The Midshipmen then went on 7-0 streak, including two goals by Chris Hill, to end the first half at 7-1.
- Navy opened up the second half with a goal by Rees to put the Mids up 8-1.
- Holy Cross quickly responded with two straight goals from Kirkpatrick, off an assist from Vogel, and senior Jack Ortlieb off an assist from freshman Sean Mullaney.
- Navy started the fourth quarter with three straight goals, including two straight from Rees.
- Vogel netted his second goal of the game with 2:39 left in the fourth quarter for an 11-4 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Tesoro posted 13 saves, while Navy goalkeeper Ryan Kern posted six for the win and Nick Ramsey secured one.
- Navy totaled 30 shots, while Holy Cross took 29.
- The Midshipmen picked up 33 ground balls, while the Crusaders tallied 21.
- Navy won 16 face-offs, while Holy Cross secured three.
- The Crusaders went 1-1 on extra-man opportunities, while the Midshipmen went 0-1.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Kirkpatrick now leads the team with 24 points.
