The Lead: Senior Sean Kirkpatrick scored three goals but the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Marist, 8-5, on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders took a 2-0 lead when freshman Kevin Kodzis and junior Matthew Fischetti each found the back of the net.
- After the Red Foxes responded with two straight goals, Kirkpatrick netted an extra-man goal off a pass by senior Jon Vogel to give the Crusaders a 3-2 advantage with 1:46 left in the first quarter.
- Kirkpatrick increased the Crusader lead to 4-2 when he posted the first goal of the second quarter off a pass from freshman Sean Mullaney.
- Michael Smith then tallied a goal for Marist as the Crusaders led 4-3 going to the half.
- The Red Foxes moved out to a 6-4 lead by netting the first three goals of the third quarter.
- Kirkpatrick scored his third goal of the contest to cut the Marist lead to 6-5 with 1:12 remaining in the third quarter.
- But the Red Foxes clinched the 8-5 victory by scoring the last two goals of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Tesoro posted 10 saves, while Marist goalkeeper Brian Corrigan posted 19 for the win.
- Each team took 34 shots.
- The Red Foxes picked up 24 ground balls, while the Crusaders tallied 20.
- Marist won nine face-offs, while Holy Cross secured eight.
- The Crusaders went 1-2 on extra-man opportunities, while the Red Foxes went 0-1.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Kirkpatrick now has three career hat tricks.
