The Lead: Ben French scored five goals for the Catamounts as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Vermont, 14-8, in Burlington on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Vermont jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and scored two more goals to open up the scoring in the second quarter, increasing their lead to 7-0.
- Senior Jack Ortleib opened the scoring for the Crusaders to make the score 7-1, but the Catamounts scored two more unanswered goals to make the score 9-1.
- Then, senior Jon Vogel found the back of the net for the Crusaders, making the score 9-2. Vermont scored two more goals to make the score 11-2 going into the half.
- Senior Kevin Lux, Ortleib and senior Marc Buermann opened the scoring for the Crusaders in the third quarter with a goal each, decreasing Vermont's lead to 11-5.
- The Catamounts responded with two more goals followed by a goal from Buermann, making the score 13-6.
- Vermont converted one more goal while Buermann and Lux each found the back of the net for the 14-8 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Tesoro made five saves, while Vermont goalkeeper Nick Washuta recorded 10 for the win.
- Holy Cross outshot Vermont, 35-25.
- The Crusaders picked up 30 ground balls and the Catamounts secured 26.
- Holy Cross won 15 face-offs, while Vermont tallied 11.
- The Catamounts went 2-3 on extra-man opportunities, while the Crusaders went 2-4.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The hat trick for Buermann was his first of the season and the fourth of his career.
