The Lead: Brendan Kearns scored four goals for the Friars as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Providence, 10-4, in Worcester on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Friars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Crusaders quickly responded with a goal by freshman Sean Mullaney off an assist from senior Kevin Lux, followed by the equalizer from senior Marc Buermann off a pass from senior Sean Kirkpatrick to make it 2-2.
- Providence then scored six unanswered goals, including three from Kearns, to take an 8-2 lead into the half.
- Kirkpatrick got the Crusaders rolling again with 13:11 left in the third quarter off a pass from senior Jon Vogel to make it an 8-3 game.
- Nick Hatzipetrakos scored a goal for the Friars with 4:49 left to play in the third quarter to extend their lead to 9-3.
- Lux fired in an unassisted shot with 13:32 left in the fourth to make it a 9-4 game.
- With 6:35 left in the game, Kearns scored the last goal of the contest for 10-4 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Tesoro made eight saves in his collegiate debut, while Providence goalkeeper Tate Boyce recorded nine saves for the win.
- Providence outshot Holy Cross, 32-24.
- The Friars picked up 35 ground balls and the Crusaders secured 23.
- Providence won 16 face-offs, while Holy Cross tallied three.
- The Friars went 1-5 on extra-man opportunities, while the Crusaders went 0-4.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Mullaney scored his first career goal.
