WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross has been ranked as one of the top 100 football programs of all-time by the Associated Press. The Crusaders check in at No. 85 on the list of the best programs of all-time, good for the fourth-best ranking of teams which currently compete in the Football Championship Subdivision. Only Pennsylvania (No. 66), Cornell (No. 72) and Fordham (No. 83) placed higher among schools now in the FCS.
The Crusaders own an all-time record of 620-508-54, good for a .547 winning percentage. Heading into the 2016 season, Holy Cross' 620 all-time victories rank as the 15th most among all FCS schools. Holy Cross has had 31 first team All-America selections, sent 69 players on to professional football, won five Lambert Cups, claimed six Patriot League championships, and was named the Division I-AA Team of the Year in 1987. The Crusaders also played in the 1946 Orange Bowl, losing to host Miami on the game's final play.
To determine the all-time rankings, the Associated Press formula counted poll appearances (one point) to mark consistency, No. 1 rankings (two points) to acknowledge elite programs and gave a bonus for AP championships (10 points). Holy Cross finished with a total of 39 points. The AP has been ranking the best teams in college football since 1936. Over 80 years and 1,103 polls, a total of 165 schools have been ranked and 44 of them have been ranked No. 1. To view the complete rankings, click here.
Holy Cross is coming off a 2015 campaign in which it went 6-5 overall and 3-3 against Patriot League foes. The Crusaders, who return 16 of 22 starters, are scheduled to open the 2016 campaign when they travel to Morgan State on Sept. 3.
