Matherne Sets New Record As Track And Field Competes At ECAC Championship

The Lead: Sophomore Zoe Matherne (Camp Hill, Pa.) broke the school record in the 1500 m run as the Crusaders closed out their 2016 season at the ECAC Championship in Princeton, N.J.

HOW IT HAPPENED (ECAC):

  • The team of senior Catherine Gildea (Milford, Conn.), sophomore Kate Spitler (Marshfield, Mass.), junior Rachel Sowinski (Mountain Top, Pa.) and senior Caroline Carley (Barrington, Ill.) placed third in the 4x800 m relay finals with a time of 9:02.04, over six seconds faster than their preliminary time.
  • Matherne earned a finals time of 4:26.23 in the 1500 m run to place third overall.

BEYOND THE RESULTS:

  • Matherne's time of 4:26.23 in the 1500 m run is a new Holy Cross record, breaking the previous record of 4:26.87 set by Jackie McNiff in 1983.
