The Lead: Junior Jon Vogel (Chesterfield, Mo.) posted four goals for the Crusaders as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team defeated Lafayette, 11-6, on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter. Sophomore Logan LeBlond (Branchburg, N.J.) opened the scoring at 13:51 while Vogel and senior Sean Wilkinson (Ridgefield, Conn.) each tallied two goals.
- The Leopards opened the second quarter with a man-up goal at 10:01 by Eric Joseph to cut the lead to 5-1.
- The Crusaders answered to make it 6-1 with a goal by junior Marc Buermann (West Caldwell, N.J.).
- Lafayette recorded back-to-back goals to cut the Crusaders' lead to 6-3 with 20 seconds remaining in the first half.
- The Crusaders opened the third quarter with a quick goal from Vogel at 11:33 to make it 7-3, yet the Leopards answered at 7:54 as Joseph tallied a goal to make it 7-4.
- The Crusaders then tallied four straight goals to increase their lead to 9-4 with 3:18 remaining in the fourth quarter. Vogel found the back of the net, followed by two goals from junior Jack Ortlieb (Newport Beach, Calif.) and a goal by Wilkinson.
- The Leopards added two consecutive goals by Kevin Lewis and Will McCarthy in the final minute of the fourth quarter to make it 11-6, as the Crusaders tallied the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Senior captain Michael Ortlieb (Newport Beach, Calif.) made four saves to earn the win, while Ben Falcone posted six for the Leopards.
- Holy Cross outshot Lafayette, 43-28.
- The Crusaders picked up 30 ground balls and the Leopards secured 23.
- The Crusaders won 13 face-offs, while the Leopards tallied eight.
- Holy Cross went 0-1 on extra-man opportunities, while Lafayette went 3-7.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Vogel has netted at least one goal in 14 consecutive games.
- Vogel's hat-trick is his sixth of the season.
- Wilkinson has at least one point in 13 straight games.
- Wilkinson's hat-trick is his second of the season, and the sixth of his career.
- Vogel posted his second game-winning goal of the season.
- Ortlieb has 131 career ground balls, which are ninth all-time in program history.
