Holy Cross Defeats Army 60-38 In Patriot League Semifinals

  • The Lead: Junior guard Robert Champion scored 15 points and pulled down six rebounds, as the Holy Cross men's basketball team downed Army West Point 60-38 in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament at Christl Arena.

 

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders turned in one of their top defensive performances of the season, holding the Black Knights to 22.6 percent shooting from the field (12 of 53) and 20.0 percent shooting from three-point range (six of 30).
  • Holy Cross also forced 18 turnovers on the day, while giving the ball away just eight times.
  • Junior forward Malachi Alexander finished the game with 13 points and seven rebounds, with junior guard Anthony Thompson adding 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
  • Army was led by Kyle Wilson with 12 points.

 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders started the day hot, jumping out to a quick 10-0 lead just 3:02 into the game.
  • Holy Cross went on to increase its lead to 12 points (24-12) with 7:01 left in the half, before the Black Knights used a 9-2 run to close the gap to five (26-21).
  • Champion would then hit two straight shots to push the margin back to nine points, and the Crusaders went on to take a 34-26 advantage into the locker room.
  • Larry Toomey hit a three-pointer early in the second half to once again bring Army to within five (34-29), before Holy Cross scored the next nine points to take control of the game.
  • An 8-0 run a few minutes later would put the Crusaders up by 20 (51-31), and Holy Cross led by at least 18 points the rest of the way.
  • The Black Knights would score only 12 points in the second half, hitting just five of 27 field goal attempts after the break.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross advances to the Patriot League championship game for the 11th time, the most appearances in the history of the Patriot League.
  • The 38 points were the fewest the Black Knights scored all season, with their previous low being 50.
  • The 38 points were also the fewest by a Holy Cross opponent since Army scored just 36 points on Jan. 14, 2009.
  • The 12 field goals made by Army were the fewest the Crusaders have allowed since Colgate hit only 12 shots on Jan. 28, 2009.
