  • The Lead: Junior guard Robert Champion posted 14 points and seven rebounds, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Boston University 83-68 at Case Gymnasium.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Freshman forward Karl Charles finished with 13 points, three assists and two blocked shots, while junior forward Malachi Alexander and senior guard Cullen Hamilton added 12 points each.
  • Holy Cross made 44.8 percent of its field goal attempts on the day (26 of 58), but only hit 58.3 percent of its free throws (seven of 12).
  • Boston University was able to connect on 58.2 percent of its shots from the floor (32 of 55) and 80.0 percent of its foul shots (12 of 15), in addition to holding a 37-22 rebounding advantage.
  • The Terriers were led by Eric Fanning with 25 points and 16 rebounds.

 

 HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Boston University opened the game hot, jumping out to a quick 14-5 lead after the first four minutes of play.
  • The Terriers increased their advantage to 13 points (24-11), before the Crusaders used a 10-4 run to get back in the game.
  • Holy Cross later closed the margin to three (30-27) after six straight points from Hamilton, before a 4-0 spurt gave Boston University a 34-27 halftime lead.
  • The Terriers held onto a small lead early in the second half, and were up 49-43 with 13:28 left to play.
  • Boston University then went on a 9-2 run to take control of the game.
  • The Crusaders would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way, with the Terriers eventually posting a 15-point victory.

 

THE TURNPIKE TROPHY:

  • The game between the Crusaders and the Terriers was part of the inaugural Turnpike Trophy competition, in which Boston University now holds a 10-3 lead.
  • Fanning was selected as the game's Turnpike Trophy MVP.
  • This athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals awards points for all head-to-head victories in both the regular season and postseason, with the Turnpike Trophy going to the school which accumulates the most points at the end of the academic year.
  • The next Turnpike Trophy match-up comes on March 3, when the women's tennis teams square off in Boston.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Tuesday, March 1, when it travels to Loyola (Md.) for a game in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament.
