THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Junior guard Robert Champion scored a career-high 25 points, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Lehigh 64-59 at Stabler Arena.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Champion made eight of 14 field goal attempts and seven of 11 three-pointers on the night, in addition to grabbing a team-high seven rebounds.
  • The Crusaders made 41.4 percent of their three-point attempts as a team (12 of 29), but hit only 34.9 percent from the floor overall (22 of 62).
  • The Mountain Hawks also struggled shooting the ball, making 36.7 percent from the field (18 of 49) and 26.7 percent from three-point range (four of 15).
  • But Lehigh held a huge advantage at the free throw line, hitting 24 of 31 foul shots (77.4 percent), while Holy Cross made just three of nine attempts at the charity stripe (33.3 percent).

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game was close throughout a first half which featured three ties and 11 lead changes.
  • The Crusaders led by as many as four points on two occasions, before eventually taking a 26-25 advantage into the locker room.
  • Holy Cross scored the first five points of the second half on a three-pointer by Champion and a layup by junior forward Malachi Alexander to take a 31-25 lead.
  • The Crusaders held onto a small lead for the next few minutes, and were later up 39-36 with 11:59 left to play.
  • A three-pointer by freshman forward Karl Charles and two free throws by Champion then put Holy Cross up by eight (44-36) with 10:20 remaining.
  • The Crusaders were still up by eight (49-41) with eight minutes left in regulation, before going cold from the floor.
  • Holy Cross would not score another point for over seven minutes, as Lehigh used an 18-0 run to pull in front by 10 points (59-49).
  • The Mountain Hawks scored their final 13 points of the game at the free throw line, including four straight by Kahron Ross in the final 20 seconds to hold on for the victory.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Champion tied the Holy Cross single-game record with seven three-point field goals made. He becomes the fifth player in school history to make seven three-pointers in one game.

 

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17, when it travels to Army West Point for a 7:00 p.m. game.
