  • The Lead: Monmouth's Micah Seaborn converted a three-point play with 7.5 seconds remaining to give the Hawks the lead, as they posted an 80-77 victory over the Holy Cross men's basketball team at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, senior guard Anthony Thompson was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • Thompson scored a team-high 18 points, while hitting four of five three-point field goal attempts and all four of his free throws.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders made 55.1 percent of their field goals, 58.3 percent of their three-pointers and 90.0 percent of their free throws on the afternoon.
  • The Hawks were able to connect on 50.0 percent of their shots from the floor and 85.0 percent of their foul shots, while holding a 28-21 rebounding advantage.
  • Senior forward Malachi Alexander totaled 13 points, five rebounds and five assists on the day.
  • Sophomore forward Karl Charles added 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, while senior center Matt Husek chipped in with 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Chris Brady led Monmouth with 21 points and six rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game was close throughout a first half which featured three ties and seven lead changes.
  • The Crusaders led by as many as five points (15-10, 12:57 remaining), while the Hawks were able to go up by six (25-19, 6:36 remaining).
  • Monmouth eventually took a 37-34 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
  • The score remained close early in the second half, and the Hawks held a 53-50 lead with 11:45 left to play.
  • After a layup by Alexander made it a one-point game, Thompson hit back-to-back three-pointers to give Holy Cross the lead.
  • The Crusaders would go in front by as many as eight (61-53), before Monmouth came back to claim a 68-67 advantage with 2:42 left to play.
  • After Thompson hit a pair of free throws, Thompson and Charles both drained three-pointers to put Holy Cross up 75-69 with less than a minute to go.
  • The Crusaders were still up by five (77-72), when Pierre Sarr converted a three-point play with 13.4 seconds remaining to make it a two-point game.
  • Seaborn then gave the Hawks the lead with 7.5 seconds left, before a pair of free throws by Austin Tilghman made the final score 80-77.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The game was part of the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational, with Holy Cross posting a 1-3 mark in the event.
  • This was the first-ever meeting between the Crusaders and the Hawks on the hardwood.
  • Monmouth entered the game ranked 11th in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25.
