Holy Cross Takes Down Harvard 63-52

  • The Lead: Sophomore forward Karl Charles totaled 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals as the Holy Cross men's basketball team posted a 63-52 victory over Harvard at Lavietes Pavilion.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

  • After the game, sophomore guard Patrick Benzan was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.
  • Benzan totaled 15 points and three assists on the evening, while hitting seven of 10 field goal attempts.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusader defense turned in an outstanding performance, holding the Crimson to just 41.5 percent shooting from the field while forcing 19 turnovers and recording 11 steals.
  • Holy Cross also shot 45.1 percent from the field on the offensive end of the court, and turned the ball over only seven times.
  • Harvard was led by Corey Johnson with 17 points.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game was close early on, with Harvard holding a 6-5 lead after the first four minutes of play.
  • The Crimson scored the next five points to extend their advantage, and would hold onto a small lead for the majority of the half.
  • Harvard was up 20-15 with 5:49 left before the break, before Holy Cross closed out the half with an 18-5 run to claim a 33-25 lead heading into the locker room.
  • Benzan scored nine of his points during that spurt, while a three-point play by senior guard Anthony Thompson gave the Crusaders the lead for good.
  • The Crimson were able to trim the margin to six (36-30) early in the second half, before Holy Cross scored 13 straight points to take control of the game.
  • Senior guard Robert Champion scored five of the Crusaders' points during that run.
  • Harvard would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way, as Holy Cross posted a 63-52 victory.

 

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The win marked the 300th career victory for Holy Cross head coach Bill Carmody.
  • Holy Cross defeated Harvard for the third consecutive season.
  • Benzan posted a career-high in scoring for the second straight game.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Friday, Nov. 25, when it plays host to South Carolina State at 1:05 p.m.
