Crusaders Down Navy 87-80 In Overtime

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Junior forward Malachi Alexander totaled a career-high 26 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots, to lead the Holy Cross men's basketball team to an 87-80 overtime victory over Navy at the Hart Center.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Senior guard Cullen Hamilton also had an outstanding game, recording a season-high 24 points on nine of 13 shooting from the field.
  • Junior guard Robert Champion added 14 points on six of 10 shooting  for the Crusaders.
  • Holy Cross hit 77.1 percent of its free throws on the afternoon (27 of 35), led by Alexander with a 12 of 13 performance.
  • Navy was led by Shawn Anderson with 25 points and eight rebounds, while  Tilman Dunbar added 24 points and four assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Midshipmen led by six points (63-57) with 2:57 remaining in the second half, when Champion converted a three-point play to cut the margin to three points.
  • Navy was back up by five with 1:33 left, before Alexander drilled a three-pointer to make the score 67-65.
  • A pair of free throws by junior guard Anthony Thompson with 13.3 seconds on the clock would later tie the game at 69-69 and force overtime.
  • A three-point play by Alexander with 2:33 remaining in overtime made the score 76-73 and gave the Crusaders the lead for good.
  • Holy Cross went on to hit nine of 12 free throws in the final minute of overtime, including seven of eight by Alexander, to pull out the victory.
  • The Midshipmen had led by as many as 12 points in the first half, before taking a 39-34 advantage into the locker room.
  • The Navy lead then stayed between three and eight points for the majority of the second half, before the Crusaders rallied to force overtime.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Alexander and Hamilton gave Holy Cross two 20-point scorers in the same game for the third time this season, while Alexander's 26 points were the most by any Crusader this year.
  • Holy Cross' 27 free throws made and 35 free throws attempted both set season highs. Navy's 34 free throw attempts were also the most by a Holy Cross opponent this year.
  • The win snapped a streak of three-straight overtime losses for the Crusaders, since a 65-62 victory over Bucknell on Jan. 10, 2015.
  • Holy Cross now stands 41-20 all-time against Navy, with a 22-6 mark at the Hart Center. The Crusaders have won 12 of the last 15 games in the series.
