Crusaders Earn 69-65 Victory Over Army West Point

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Freshman forward Karl Charles posted a double-double with 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, to lead the Holy Cross men's basketball team to a 69-65 victory over Army West Point at the Hart Center.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Junior forward Malachi Alexander also had an outstanding game for the Crusaders, finishing with a season-high 20 points, six rebounds and three steals.
  • Holy Cross hit 82.8 percent of its free throws on the night (24 of 29), led by an 11 of 14 performance by Charles.
  • The Crusaders also committed just seven turnovers in the game, while forcing the Black Knights to give the ball away 16 times.
  • Army was led by Kennedy Edwards with 11 points, and Dylan Cox with 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Postgame Press Conference & Highlights

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After trailing by eight at halftime (40-32), Holy Cross scored the first six points of the second half to close the gap to two (40-38).
  • The Black Knights were back up by six (45-39) a few minutes later before the Crusaders scored the next eight points, claiming the lead (47-45) on a three-pointer by Alexander.
  • The game would stay close for the next several minutes, and the score was tied at 51-51 with 8:11 left in regulation.
  • After Army scored the next four points to pull back in front, Holy Cross used an 11-4 run to regain the lead (62-59), with Alexander scoring all 11 points.
  • The score was then tied at 62-62 with two minutes to play, when Charles converted a three-point play to give the Crusaders the lead for good.
  • Holy Cross went on to hit all four of its free throw attempts in the final 10 seconds to hold on for the victory.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Alexander and Charles gave the Crusaders two 20-point scorers in the same game for the second time this season.
  • Freshman forward Jehyve Floyd recorded new career highs with seven points and three blocked shots.
  • Junior guard Anthony Thompson tied his season high with six assists, while having only one turnover.
