The Lead: Despite a four-run third inning, solo home runs by Colgate's Brigit Ieuter and Tara Grennan helped lift the Raiders over Holy Cross by a final of 6-4 in game one. Freshman Savannah Young (Celebration, Fla.) went 2-3 with a single, triple, four RBIs and one run scored to help lift the Crusaders in a 6-5 victory over Colgate in game two at Easton Street Field on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League softball action.
GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Colgate starter Brigit Ieuter helped out herself out as she rocketed a solo home run to left center field to put the Raiders up 1-0 at the bottom of the second inning.
- In the top of the third, Holy Cross got to Ieuter for four runs that allowed the Crusaders to take the 4-1 lead.
- Senior tri-captain Abigail Lang (Londonderry, N.H.) began the inning with an infield single to the shortstop and advanced to third on a double to right field by freshman Mandy McCarthy (Pearl River, N.Y.). On a single up the middle by sophomore Emily Krisanda (Oak Hill, Va.), Lang was able to plate.
- With runners on second and third, freshman Taylor Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) smashed a two-run double to left field that allowed McCarthy and junior tri-captain Sarah Kane (Jacksonville, Fla.) to come across home plate. A sacrifice fly to left field by junior Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.) allowed Krisanda to score the fourth Crusader run.
- The Raiders reclaimed the lead for the second time in the bottom half of the fourth frame with a four-run inning to take the 5-4 lead.
- Holly Geranen successfully reached first on a fielder's choice and came around from first on a double to left center from the bat of Gillian Murray. Murray then scored the second Raiders run of the inning on an RBI infield single by Ieuter, who advanced to second on the throw. Two more runs crossed for Colgate as Katie Bushee launched a triple to right field and allowed both Murray and Ieuter to plate.
- The Raiders added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on a solo bomb to left field by Tara Grennan.
- Holy Cross threatened in the top of the sixth with runners two outs and runners on first and second, but were unable to capitalize. In the top of the seventh, the Crusaders registered a single up the middle by Moss, but were unable to bring her in as Colgate took the 6-4 victory in game one.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Colgate outhit Holy Cross 7-6 through seven innings of play.
- The Crusaders left four runners on base, while Holy Cross left six runners on base.
- Colgate starter Brigit Ieuter (9-2) earned the victory as she tossed a solid seven innings and allowed four runs on six hits with three walks and seven punch-outs.
- Durham (2-8) suffered the loss in game one as she pitched six innings and allowed six runs on seven hits with three punch-outs and one walk.
GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Holy Cross jumped out to the quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Kane sent a single up the middle and came around to score on another single up the middle by Young.
- In the bottom half of the inning for Colgate, the Raiders answered with three runs of its own to take the 3-1 lead.
- Colgate got on the board as Marisa Dowling sent a single down the right field line that allowed Bushee to advance to third. On an error committed by the Crusader defense, Bushee was able to cross home plate. A fly ball by Grennan and a ground ball out to the second baseman Geranen allowed the Raider to tack on two runs.
- With one out in the bottom of the third frame, Geranen sent a sacrifice fly to right field to score Bushee as Colgate took the 4-1 lead.
- Senior Emma Keough (Rochester, Mass.) began the fourth inning for the Crusaders with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Lang was caught trying to steal second, but allowed Keogh to come in an score as Holy Cross cut the Colgate lead in half at 4-2. In the fifth inning, the Crusaders made the pitching change as Durham entered in relief for freshman pitcher Katy Watson (Bexley, Ohio).
- Holy Cross' offense came alive as the Crusaders were able to tack four more runs on the board in its half of the fifth inning
- Moss was able to advance the runners from first and second on a single to left field that loaded up the bases full of Crusaders with one out. With two outs and the bases still loaded and Young up to the plate, she sent a base-clearing triple down to deep right center. The fourth Crusader run of the inning came on a passed ball that allowed Young to reach home safely to take the 6-4 lead.
- Despite allowing Colgate to get within one run on an RBI double to left field by Bushee, Durham was able to retire the final batter in the bottom of the seventh as Holy Cross secured the 6-5 game two victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Through seven innings, Holy Cross outhit Colgate by 10-7.
- Colgate left three runners on base, while Holy Cross left eight.
- Durham earned the victory in game two (3-8) as she tossed four solid innings and allowed one run on three hits. Watson got the no decision as she pitched three innings and allowed four runs on four hits.
- Colgate starter Megan Camase took the loss (3-3) as she tossed 4.2 innings and allowed six runs on seven hits, while she struck out one and walked three. Kira Griswold pitched 2.1 innings of relief as she allowed three hits and walked three.

- The Crusaders return to the diamond tomorrow, April 19, in the series finale at Easton Street Field against Colgate with the first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
