Men's Basketball Falls In Overtime At Bucknell In Patriot League Quarterfinals

  • The Lead: Senior forward Malcolm Miller (Laytonsville, Md.) scored a career-high 34 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists, four blocks and two steals, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Bucknell 90-83 in overtime in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament at Sojka Pavilion.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Bucknell led by 16 points (48-32) with 15:16 left in regulation, when Holy Cross went on a 9-0 run to work its way back into the game.
  • The Bison were still up by seven (65-58) with 6:01 remaining, before a three-point play by Miller and a layup by junior guard Cullen Hamilton (Washington, D.C.) brought the Crusaders to within two.
  • Holy Cross eventually pulled in front 72-71 on a pair of free throws by Miller with 2:10 left to play, before two free throws by Zach Thomas put Bucknell ahead by one (73-72).
  • A 16-foot jump shot by Hamilton gave the Crusaders a 74-73 lead on the next possession, then senior guard Justin Burrell (Dumfries, Va.) drained two free throws with 35.4 seconds to go to make the score 76-73.
  • But Chris Hass converted a three-point play for the Bison with 25.3 seconds remaining to tie the score at 76-76, and the game went to overtime after a three-point attempt by Miller in the closing seconds was off the mark.
  • Bucknell was able to score the first six points in overtime, all coming on free throws, and eventually went back in front by nine (86-77).
  • Holy Cross would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way, as the Bison were able to pull out the victory.
  • Holy Cross had opened the game by jumping out to a quick 9-4 lead, and was still up by five points (13-8) with 13:57 left before the break.
  • Bucknell then used a 13-0 run over the next six minutes to pull in front, and went on to take an 11-point lead (33-22) with 3:25 left in the half.
  • The Bison eventually took a 36-27 lead into the locker room at halftime, and opened the second half with a 12-5 spurt before the Crusaders were able to rally.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Bucknell hit 48.1 percent of its field goal attempts on the night (26 of 54), while Holy Cross was able to connect on 47.8 percent of its shots from the floor (32 of 67).
  • But the Crusaders were unable to overcome a huge discrepancy at the free throw line, as the Bison hit 34 of 41 foul shots while Holy Cross was just 16 of 18.
  • Miller scored the 1,000th point of his collegiate career on a layup with 7:32 remaining in the second half, to become the 49th 1,000-point scorer in school history.
