Holy Cross Falls 89-81 At Lafayette

  • The Lead: Senior forward Malcolm Miller (Laytonsville, Md.) scored a career-high 25 points, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Lafayette 89-81 at the Kirby Sports Center.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Miller totaled eight rebounds, three assists and three steals, while hitting nine of 14 field goal attempts.
  • Lafayette hit 57.1 percent of its field goal attempts (32 of 56) and 47.1 percent of its three-pointers (eight of 17) on the night.
  • Holy Cross also shot the ball well, knocking down 50.0 percent of its field goals (30 of 60) and 50.0 percent of its three-pointers (12 of 24).
  • But the Leopards shot almost twice as many free throws as the Crusaders, and outscored Holy Cross 17-9 at the charity stripe.
  • Senior guard Justin Burrell (Dumfries, Va.) finished the night with 14 points and three assists.
  • Junior guard Eric Green (Mountain House, Calif.) added 13 points and two assists, while junior guard Cullen Hamilton (Washington, D.C.) had 12 points and three rebounds.
  • Lafayette was led by Seth Hinrichs with 19 points and five rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders started the game hot, jumping out to an early 12-8 advantage after the first three minutes of action.
  • Lafayette responded by scoring the next seven points to take the lead, and would go in front by nine points (26-17) with 11 minutes remaining in the first half.
  • Holy Cross came back with a 12-4 spurt to close the gap, and eventually trailed by four points (44-40) heading into the locker room.
  • The Leopards maintained a small lead early in the second half, and were up by just one (52-51) with 14:39 left to play.
  • Lafayette then went on a 14-3 run over the next 3:27 to go in front by 12 (66-54).
  • The Crusaders were able to get no closer than six points the rest of the way, as the Leopards hit six of 10 free throws in the final three minutes to hold on for the win.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, Feb. 22, when they travel to Navy for a 12:00 p.m. game.
