THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Freshman forward Karl Charles scored a team-high 12 points, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by No. 2 Kansas 92-59 at Allen Fieldhouse.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Charles hit eight of 10 free throw attempts on the night, in addition to posting a career-high four steals.
  • Junior forward Malachi Alexander finished with 11 points, two rebounds and two steals.
  • Junior guard Robert Champion, junior center Matt Husek and freshman guard Matt Zignorski added seven points each.
  • The Jayhawks had six players score in double-figures, led by Wayne Selden with 15 points.
  • Kansas hit 63.0 percent of its field goal attempts (34 of 54), 60.0 percent of its three-pointers (12 of 20) and 100.0 percent of its free throws (12 of 12) on the night.
  • The Crusaders made 82.6 percent of their foul shots (19 of 23), but were only able to connect on 38.1 percent of their shots from the floor (16 of 42).

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Kansas led 8-6 early on, before scoring the next seven points to extend its advantage to 15-6 with 14:31 left in the first half.
  • The Jayhawks were later up by 11 (24-13), when Holy Cross used a 7-2 run to close to within six (26-20).
  • But Kansas scored the next nine points to push its lead to 15 (35-20), and would lead by double figures for the rest of the half.
  • The Jayhawks eventually took a 50-33 advantage into the locker room.
  • The Crusaders started the second half hot, using a 13-2 spurt over the first four minutes to make it a six-point game (52-46).
  • But Kansas responded with a 17-1 run over the next seven minutes to regain control of the game.
  • Holy Cross would get no closer than 18 points in the final 10 minutes, as the Jayhawks pulled away to eventually win by 33.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Kansas improves to 3-1 all-time against Holy Cross, with three straight victories.
  • Holy Cross' 19 turnovers were its most this season, while its 17 rebounds were its fewest this year.
  • The crowd of 16,300 in attendance was the fifth-largest to see the Crusaders play in the last 10 years.
