Holy Cross Falls To UMass Lowell, 75-67

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Holy Cross senior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) scored a team and season-high 17 points, but the Crusaders were defeated by UMass Lowell, 75-67, in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Costello Athletic Center.

TURNING POINT:

  • With the score tied at 4-4 just over one minute into the first quarter, UMass Lowell embarked on a 14-0 rally to gain an 18-8 advantage. The River Hawks held the 15-point, 23-8 advantage after one quarter of play and kept the lead for the remainder of the contest.

HOLY CROSS HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Holy Cross senior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) notched her second career double-double with 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with three blocked shots.
  • Sophomore guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored 16 points, while classmate Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (Newton, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points, four rebounds and three steals.
  • Mifsud also chipped in with three assists and three steals.

FIRST HALF:

  • The teams traded baskets to begin the game, as it was tied at 4-4 at the 8:19-mark of the first quarter. UMass Lowell, however, erupted on a 14-0 surge over the next 4:15 to gain an 18-4 advantage (4:04). The River Hawks outscored the Crusaders, 5-4, to end the stanza with a 23-8 lead.
  • Holy Cross began the second quarter on a 14-6 rally to slice the deficit to 29-23 at the 4:38-mark of the period, as Doherty and Hourigan had four points apiece during the run. UMass Lowell responded and ended the first half on a 9-6 spurt to head into the locker room with a 38-29 lead.
  • The River Hawks connected on 17-of-27 from the floor (63.6%) in the first half, while they drained 3-of-7 from downtown (42.9%). The Crusaders hit on 37.9 percent from the field (11-29), but did not connect on any of their six attempts from behind the arc.

SECOND HALF:

  • In the third quarter, Holy Cross slowly chipped away at the deficit and brought the margin to eight points (43-35) at the 6:57-mark of the period. The Crusaders kept up its offensive pressure and whittled the margin to two points (48-46) with 17 ticks on the clock on a Hourigan layup.
  • UMass Lowell, however, drained a three-pointer as time expired in the third quarter to gain a 51-46 advantage.
  • After a layup by the River Hawks to begin the fourth quarter, Thomas-Waheed drilled a three-pointer to slice the deficit to four points (53-49). UMass Lowell answered with a layup on the next possession, as the two teams traded baskets over the next three minutes with the River Hawks ahead 57-52 (5:43).
  • UMass Lowell hit a three-pointer at the 5:18-mark of the period to go ahead by eight points (60-52), as both teams did not score for the next 3:13. The River Hawks, however, ended the scoring drought with a three-pointer at the 2:13-mark of the fourth quarter to go ahead by 11 points (63-52).
  • UMass Lowell hit 10-of-12 free throws over the final two-plus minutes to ice the game and make the score its final, 75-67.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • UMass Lowell hit 50.0 percent of its shots from the field (27-54) and drained 41.2 percent from behind the arc (7-17). Holy Cross connected on 26-of-64 from the floor (40.6%), but only hit 3-of-19 from downtown (15.8%).
  • The Crusaders shot the ball well from the free-throw line, as they canned 12-of-14 (85.7%), as the River Hawks hit on 14-of-18 from the charity stripe (77.8%).
  • UMass Lowell held the statistical edge in total rebounds (38-30) and assists (15-9), while the Crusaders led in steals (12-5), points in the paint (40-28) and second-chance points (12-4).

NEWS & NOTES:

  • The double-double for Hourigan was the second of her career, as she played in her 100th career game as a Crusader. She also crossed the 500-point milestone, as she has scored 510 in her career.
  • Doherty and Gillespie each scored their 300th career point in the contest.
  • Doherty's 16 points are a season-high and tie her personal-best scoring mark, while Mifsud's 17 points are also a season-high.
