Holy Cross Falls To Albany 88-84 In Overtime

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Junior guard Anthony Thompson scored a career-high 23 points, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Albany 88-84 in overtime at the Hart Center.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Thompson hit six of 10 attempts from three-point range on the day, in addition to grabbing four rebounds and handing out three assists.
  • Junior forward Malachi Alexander added a season-high 18 points, six rebounds and four assists.
  • Junior guard Robert Champion had 11 points and six rebounds.
  • The Great Danes were led by Peter Hooley with 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
  • Albany made 27 of 30 free throw attempts (90.0 percent) in the game, while Holy Cross connected on 14 of 18 foul shots (77.8 percent).

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Albany led by five points (61-56) with six minutes remaining in regulation, when Holy Cross went on a 10-1 run to pull in front by four (66-62).
  • Thompson, Alexander and freshman forward Karl Charles all hit three-pointers during that spurt.
  • The Great Danes came back to tie up the score at 66-66, and the game was still tied at 70-70 with less than 10 seconds to play.
  • Thompson then drove the lane for a layup with 5.6 seconds left to give Holy Cross the lead, but Albany's Mike Rowley went the length of the court to score with 0.6 seconds on the clock, forcing overtime.
  • The Crusaders led 81-79 with two minutes left in the extra session following a three-pointer by Champion, but the Great Danes responded with a  three-pointer from Hooley to take the lead for good.
  • Albany then made six of eight free throws in the final 1:05 to hold on for the victory.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The win was the first ever by the Great Danes over the Crusaders, with Holy Cross now leading the all-time series 2-1.
  • Thompson had made only four three-pointers all season, before hitting six against Albany. Over the last two seasons, he is now 11 of 15 from three-point range against the Great Danes.
