Men?s Basketball Takes Down Hartford 90-68

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Junior guard Robert Champion scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Holy Cross men's basketball team to a 90-68 victory over Hartford at the Chase Family Arena.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Champion hit seven of 11 field goal attempts, three of five three-pointers and five of six free throws on the night, in addition to posting four rebounds and three steals.
  • Freshman forward Karl Charles finished with 13 points, three assists and two steals, while senior guard Cullen Hamilton added 12 points and three assists.
  • Junior forward Malachi Alexander (11 points, nine rebounds, six assists) and junior center Matt Husek (11 points, eight rebounds) rounded out five Holy Cross players in double figures.
  • The Hawks were led by Pancake Thomas with 16 points and four rebounds.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders held a 12-8 lead after the first six minutes of play, before going on a 17-2 run over the next five minutes to claim a 29-10 advantage.
  • Six different Holy Cross players scored during that spurt, led by five points from Alexander.
  • The Crusader lead would stay between 15 and 23 points for the remainder of the first half, with Holy Cross eventually heading into the locker room up by 19 (45-26).
  • After Hartford scored the first five points of the second half, Holy Cross went on a 16-0 run to extend its lead to 30 points (61-31).
  • The Crusaders would eventually lead by as many as 32, before finally claiming a 22-point victory.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross shot a season-best 66.0 percent from the floor, hitting 33 of 50 field goal attempts. That marked the team's best single-game percentage since hitting 29 of 43 shots (67.4 percent) against Lafayette on Feb. 20, 2013.
  • The Crusaders outrebounded their opponent for the first time this year, holding a 35-17 advantage on the boards.
  • Holy Cross' 45-26 halftime lead was its largest of the season.

 

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross will take an eight-day break for final exams, before returning to action on Monday, Dec. 21, when it plays host to Maine at 7:05 p.m.
