Crusaders Take Down Harvard 50-49

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Junior forward Malachi Alexander totaled 17 points and five rebounds, to lead the Holy Cross men's basketball team to a 50-49 victory over Harvard at the Hart Center.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Alexander downed five of nine field goal attempts and five of seven free throws on the afternoon.
  • Junior guard Anthony Thompson added 13 points, while making all seven of his free throws.
  • Junior guard Robert Champion finished with 11 points, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
  • The Crimson were led by Evan Cummins, Tommy McCarthy and Corbin Miller with eight points each.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross started the day hot, hitting its first four shots to take a 9-0 lead just 2:40 into the game.
  • Harvard responded with a 10-3 spurt over the next 6:10, to trim the margin down to two points.
  • The Crusaders were able to build their lead back up to five points (21-16), before going scoreless for the final 5:17 of the half.
  • The Crimson used a 7-0 run during that time to take their first lead of the day (23-21) heading into the locker room.
  • Holy Cross opened the second half by scoring eight of the first 10 points to pull back in front by five (29-24).
  • The game would stay close for the next several minutes, and Harvard held a 35-34 advantage with 10 minutes left to play.
  • The Crusaders then went on an 11-0 run to claim their largest lead of the day (45-35) with 5:26 remaining.
  • The Crimson refused to go quietly, scoring seven straight points before a three-pointer by Champion put Holy Cross back up by six (48-42) with 2:45 on the clock.
  • After Harvard closed the margin to two points (48-46) in the final minute, Thompson downed both ends of a one-and-one to make the score 50-46.
  • Tommy McCarthy hit a three-pointer for the Crimson with 5.9 seconds left to make it a one-point game, but the Crusaders were then able to run out the clock to claim the victory.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross has now beaten Harvard for the second straight year, after dropping the previous six games in the series.
  • The last time the Crusaders won a game when scoring 50 points or less came on Nov. 9, 2012, when they defeated Old Dominion 46-45.
