THE BASICS:
• Score: Holy Cross 45, Georgetown 7
• Records: Holy Cross 6-5, 3-3 PL; Georgetown 4-7, 2-4 PL
• Location: Fitton Field, Worcester, Mass.
• The Lead: Junior wide receiver Brendan Flaherty caught 10 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown, as the Holy Cross football team defeated Georgetown 45-7 at Fitton Field. Flaherty broke the Patriot League single-season record for receptions with 4:24 remaining in the third quarter, and finishes the year with 106 total catches.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• Senior wide out Kalif Raymond totaled 11 receptions on the day for 140 yards and a score.
• Junior quarterback Peter Pujals hit on 24 of 39 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns.
• Senior strong safety Matt Bhaya led the Holy Cross defense with eight tackles, an interception and two pass breakups.
• Senior defensive tackle Mike Galantini added seven tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss.
• Holy Cross finished with 394 yard of total offense on the day, while holding Georgetown to just 213 total yards.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• On the second play of the game, junior free safety Luke Ford intercepted a pass and returned it to the Georgetown four-yard line.
• Two plays later, junior tailback Gabe Guild scored on a five-yard run to give the Crusaders a 7-0 lead.
• Guild added an 18-yard touchdown less than six minutes later, then Pujals hit Raymond with a 32-yard scoring strike to put Holy Cross up 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.
• Pujals connected with Flaherty for a three-yard touchdown early in the second quarter, before senior placekicker Connor Fitzgerald booted a 22-yard field goal to make the halftime score 31-0.
• Georgetown would put its only points on the board midway through the third quarter on a six-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Nolan to Matthew Buckman.
• The Crusaders responded with a one-yard scoring run by sophomore tailback Diquan Walker, and on the Hoyas' next play Bhaya intercepted a pass and returned it to the one-yard line.
• Galantini then scored the final points of the day with a one-yard run for the first touchdown of his collegiate career.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
• Flaherty broke the Patriot League single-season record for receptions, which had been held by Javarus Dudley of Fordham with 101 catches in 2003.
• The Crusader finish the year with a winning record for the first time since 2011, and for the eighth time in Tom Gilmore's 12 seasons as the head coach.
