Holy Cross Falls To Quinnipiac On Saturday Afternoon

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Holy Cross sophomore guard Tricia Byrne (Dunmore, Pa.) recorded 12 points, six rebounds and seven assists, but the Crusaders were defeated by Quinnipiac, 74-61, in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the TD Bank Sports Center.

TURNING POINT:

  • Holy Cross trailed by one point (60-59) with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, but Quinnipiac closed the game on a 14-2 surge to claim the 74-60 victory.

HOLY CROSS HIGHLIGHTS:

  • In addition to Byrne for Holy Cross, sophomore guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (Newton, Mass.) totaled 12 points, three rebounds and three steals.
  • Crusader senior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) tallied 10 points and four boards, sophomore Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) posted eight points, five caroms and four helpers. Senior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) registered seven points and a team-high seven rebounds.

FIRST HALF:

  • Holy Cross jumped out to an early 9-3 advantage at the 5:27-mark of the first quarter on the back of a three-pointer by senior guard Kate Gillespie (Washington, D.C.).
  • Quinnipiac countered with an 8-2 spurt to tie the game at 11-11 with 2:15 left in the stanza, but the Crusaders outscored the Bobcats, 3-2, over the final minutes to gain a 14-13 edge after the first quarter.
  • Holy Cross pushed its lead to four points (19-15) on a layup by Thomas-Waheed at the 7:37-mark of the second quarter, but the Bobcats answered with a 12-2 rally to gain a 27-21 lead (3:02).
  • Thomas-Waheed and Byrne drained back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game at 27-27, but Quinnipiac ended the period on a 7-1 run to head into the locker room with a 34-28 advantage.
  • Both teams played a sloppy first half, combining for 31 turnovers (Holy Cross 18, Quinnipiac 13).

SECOND HALF:

  • Quinnipiac increased its lead to 11 points (40-29) at the 8:13-mark of the third quarter, but a 6-0 run by Holy Cross over the next 1:08 to cut the deficit to 40-35 (7:05).
  • The Crusaders worked the margin to three points (48-45) with 1:19 left in the period, but the Bobcats ended the third quarter on a 5-2 spurt to gain a 52-47 advantage.  
  • Holy Cross scored five quick points in the first minute of the fourth quarter on a layup by Hourigan and a three-pointer by Scott to tie the game at 52-52.
  • The Crusaders kept the game close and trailed Quinnipiac by one (60-59) with seven minutes on the clock, but the Bobcats, however, ended the game on a 14-2 run to claim a 74-61 victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross shot 39.7 percent from the field (23-58), while Quinnipiac drained 40.0 percent of its shots from the floor (24-60).
  • The Crusaders canned 7-of-21 from downtown (33.3%), while it limited the Bobcats to 20.0 percent shooting from behind the arc (4-20).
  • Quinnipiac held the statistical advantages in total rebounds (46-32), second-chance points (20-2) and points off turnovers (25-16).
  • Holy Cross committed 25 turnovers in the game, while Quinnipiac turned the ball over 20 times in the contest.
  • Quinnipiac was led by Adily Martucci, who tallied a game-high 18 points.
