Crusaders Down Marist 67-64 In Season Opener

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Holy Cross 67, Marist 64

  • Date: November 13, 2015
  • The Lead: Junior guard Robert Champion totaled 16 points and eight rebounds, to lead the Holy Cross men's basketball team to a 67-64 victory over Marist at the James J. McCann Center.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Champion tied his career-high for scoring, and set a new career-high for rebounds.
  • Junior center Matt Husek posted the first double-double of his collegiate career with 12 points and 12 rebounds, setting career-highs in both categories.
  • Senior guard Cullen Hamilton added 11 points, while junior forward Malachi Alexander scored 10 points.
  • Khalid Hart led the Red Foxes with 21 points, but scored only two points in the game's final 14 minutes.
  • The Crusaders held Marist to just 16.7 percent shooting (four of 24) from three-point range on the night.
  • Holy Cross also made 86.7 percent of its free throws (13 of 15).

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders started the game hot, hitting four of their first six shots to take an early 9-0 lead.
  • Holy Cross was later up by seven (16-9), before Hamilton hit a three-pointer and Champion scored on the fast break to make the score 21-9.
  • Marist responded with a 9-0 spurt to get back into the game, and trailed by just one point (23-22) with 1:58 left in the first half.
  • The Crusaders closed out the half with an 8-2 run to build their lead back to seven points (31-24) heading into the locker room.
  • Early in the second half, the Red Foxes used an 8-0 spurt to claim their first lead of the night (37-36).
  • Marist would increase its lead to six points (52-46) with 10 minutes remaining, before Holy Cross used a 14-2 run of its own to take the lead for good.
  • The Crusaders were up by just two points with three minutes left, before a three-point play by Husek made the score 65-60.
  • The Red Foxes closed to within one point (65-64) in the final moments, but two free throws by Champion with 6.7 seconds remaining clinched the victory.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The win gave head coach Bill Carmody his first victory with the Crusaders.
  • Holy Cross improves to 68-29 all-time in season openers, and has now won two straight openers and three of its last four.

 

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Monday, Nov. 16, when it travels to Brown for a 7:00 p.m. game.
