Football Earns 34-33 Victory Over Bryant

THE BASICS:

• Score: Holy Cross 34, Bryant 33

• Records: Holy Cross 4-4; Bryant 4-4

• Location: Fitton Field, Worcester, Mass.

• The Lead: Senior placekicker Connor Fitzgerald booted a 31-yard field goal with 13 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to lift the Holy Cross football team to a 34-33 victory over Bryant at Fitton Field.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Junior wide out Brendan Flaherty led the Crusaders with a career-high 13 receptions for 141 yards and a touchdown, in addition to rushing three yards for a score.

• Senior wide receiver Kalif Raymond added seven catches for 82 yards and a touchdown, to go along with an 86-yard kickoff return for a score.

• Junior quarterback Peter Pujals also had a fine day, finishing with 361 yards of total offense while throwing for two touchdowns.

• The Holy Cross defense was led by senior defensive end Dewayne Cameron with six tackles, two sacks and three tackles for loss.

• Bryant's Ricardo McCray rushed 29 times for 175 yards on the afternoon, while Dalton Easton hit on 21 of 39 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions.

 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• The Crusaders opened the scoring at the 10:22-mark of the first quarter on a three-yard touchdown run by Flaherty.

• After Easton hit John Lavin for a 13-yard score, Raymond returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown to put the Crusaders up 14-6.

• Early in the second quarter, Pujals found Flaherty with a 15-yard scoring strike to increase the Holy Cross lead to 21-6.

• Easton threw two more touchdown passes in the second quarter, while Fitzgerald added a 41-yard field goal, and the Crusaders led 24-20 at the break.

• Easton connected with Chad Ward for a 36-yard touchdown early in the third quarter to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the game.

• Charles Wingate then returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown to put Bryant up 33-24 heading to the fourth quarter.

• With 6:16 remaining, Pujals threw an 11-yard scoring strike to Raymond, to trim the margin to two points.

• The Crusader defense would later force a punt in the closing minutes, and Holy Cross had one last possession starting at its own 47-yard line with 1:07 left to play and no timeouts.

• The Crusaders proceeded to march 39 yards in seven plays, before Fitzgerald kicked the game-winning field goal.

 

UP NEXT:

• Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 7, when it travels to Lehigh for a 12:30 p.m. game.
