Women?s Soccer Defeated By Boston University In Turnpike Trophy Matchup

  • The Lead: Boston University used a trio of goal scorers to lift it to a 3-0 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League women's soccer action on Wednesday evening at Nickerson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Boston University scored the game's first goal just 73 seconds into the contest, as Dorrie Varley-Barrett gathered a loose ball and converted from three yards out to put the hosts ahead 1-0.
  • Holy Cross had a chance to tie the game in the 26th minute, as freshman Megan Lawlor (Morristown, N.J.) headed a corner kick on target, but Terrier goalkeeper Alyssa Parisi guided the ball over the crossbar.
  • Crusader senior Annie Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) had a breakaway down the left side of the field in the 34th minute, but Parisi made the diving save to preserve the shutout.
  • Boston University gained the 2-0 lead in the 61st minute (60:12), as Rachel Bloznalis scored on a free kick from 30 yards out.
  • Galvin had a chance just over two minutes later to cut into the deficit as she slipped a shot by Parisi, but Bloznalis made a defensive save right on the goal line.
  • Crusader sophomore Emily George (Montpelier, Vt.) gathered a loose ball on a corner in the 83rd minute and ripped a shot from the top of the box, but the ball rang the crossbar and out of play.
  • The Terriers added a goal in the 84th minute (83:49) to make the score its final, 3-0. Rachel Blauner fed a pass from the right side into the box to McKenna Doyle, who converted the one-timer from 12 yards out.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Parisi made four saves for the Terriers, while Holy Cross junior netminder Brooke Holle (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) was called upon to make six stops.
  • Boston University held the 17-9 advantage in total shots, but closer edges in shots on goal (7-6) and corner kicks (11-8).

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 25 when it host American in its final regular season home game at 1:05 p.m. The women's soccer program will honor their six graduating seniors in a pregame ceremony at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.
