Boardman Lifts Women's Hockey To 7-2 Win Over Manhattanville

The Lead: Junior Mackenzie Boardman (Anchorage, Alaska) led the Holy Cross women's hockey team to a 7-2 victory over Manhattanville in the first game of the Rutland Herald Invitational at Spartan Arena on Friday night as she netted two goals and two assists for four points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Holy Cross opened the flood gates as it struck twice in the first period and put the pressure on Manhattanville early.
  • Boardman scored her first goal four minutes into the first period (16:21) past Manhattanville goalie Kirsten Shaughnessy as freshman Kara Violette (Biddeford, Maine) and sophomore Meghan O'Donnell (Lancaster, Mass.) were credited with the assists, giving the Crusaders the 1-0 lead. 
  • Senior Mary Klimasewiski (Cochester, Conn.) netted the second Crusader goal of the game with five minutes remaining in the period with senior captain Francesca Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Boardman coming up with the assists, giving Holy Cross the 2-0 advantage.
  • The Crusaders carried their momentum going into the second period as Panarelli netted her fourth goal of the season 10 minutes in. Boardman and Klimasewiski assisted on the goal and put Holy Cross up 3-0.
  • Up 3-0, the Crusaders were not done scoring as Holy Cross went on to strike two more times in the second period.
  • With Holy Cross on the power play, Boardman was able to connect for her second goal of the game with junior captain Taylor McGee (Pearl River, N.Y.) and sophomore Isabela Bagi (Branford, Conn.) with the assists (10:38), increasing the lead to 4-0.
  • Holy Cross increased its lead to 5-0 on a goal by senior Jessica Frascotti (Needham, Mass.) at 12:50 and was assisted by Bagi.
  • As the Crusaders gained the five-goal advantage, Shaughnessy was replaced by sophomore goalie Olivia Drew.
  • Manhattanville got on the board with four minutes remaining in the second period on a goal by Alla Traun and was assisted by Rachael Morrison. At the end of the period, Holy Cross was up by a score of 5-1.
  • Senior Nicole Giannino (Bay Shore, N.Y.)  tallied her team-leading eighth goal of the season on the Crusaders' second power play opportunity of the game as freshman Lauren Abbenante (Cranston, R.I.) was credited with the assist, giving Holy Cross the 6-1 lead (13:00).
  • Manhattanville netted its second goal of the game while on the power-play. Morrison was able to get the puck past senior goalie Krista Manzanares (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and was assisted by Michele Meggiolaro and Aubrey Bachand, cutting the lead to 6-2 (14:41).
  • Holy Cross sealed the 7-2 victory on a goal by freshman Emily Lissner (Woburn, Mass.) that was assisted by Abbenante and Giannino.
  • The Valiants were unable to get the puck past Manzanares as the clock wound down to zero.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Manzanares had 23 saves for the Crusaders, while Shaughnessy had 10 saves and Drew had 15 saves for the Valiants.
  • Holy Cross held the advantage in shots on goal (32-25) and in the faceoff circle (26-23).
  • The Crusaders went 2-4 in power-play opportunities as the Valiants went 1-3.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Boardman had two goals and two assists for four points, as five players each tallied two points (Klimasewiski, Bagi, Giannino, Abbenante and Panarelli).
  • Manzanares recorded 23 saves, making it her first game of the season with 20+ saves.
