Women's Hockey Shuts Out Castleton, 4-0

The Lead: Sophomore Isabela Bagi (Branford, Conn.), freshmen Kara Violette (Biddeford, Maine) and Emily Lissner (Woburn, Mass.) and junior Mackenzie Boardman (Anchorage, Alaska) each netted goals as Holy Cross shut out Castleton 4-0 on Friday afternoon in ECAC East women's hockey action at Spartan Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Holy Cross jumped to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Bagi as she slipped the puck past Castleton goalie Paula Stephens nine minutes into the first period (11:16) with the assist credited to junior captain Taylor McGee (Pearl River, N.Y.).
  • Neither Holy Cross or Castleton were able to find the back of the net in the second stanza with the Spartans outshot the Crusaders 12-6. Each team also went 0-1 in power-play opportunities.
  • Violette kicked off the final period of the game as she netted tucked her 10th goal of the season into the back of the net past Stephens five minutes in. The assist was credited to Boardman as Holy Cross went up 2-0 (15:11).
  • Just five minutes later, Lissner netted the third Crusader goal with assists coming from freshman Lauren Abbenante (Cranston, R.I.) and senior Madison Schneider (Fort Myers, Fla.), putting the Crusaders up to a comfortable 3-0 lead (10:55).
  • Boardman netted her fifth goal of the season with just under three minutes left in regulation with the assist credited to Violette, increasing the Holy Cross lead to 4-0 (2:20).
  • Holy Cross outshot 10-4 in the third stanza as the Spartans were unable to get the puck past senior goalie Alexandra Stevenson (Norwood, N.Y.), sealing the 4-0 Crusader victory and improved their record to 12-5-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Stevenson had 20 saves for the Crusaders, while Stephens had 21 saves for the Spartans.
  • Holy Cross outshot Castleton 25-20 and held the advantage in the face-off circle (27-22).
  • The Spartans went 0-2 in power-play opportunities as the Crusaders went 1 for 3.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • This is the team's fifth shutout victory of the season.
  • With the 4-0 victory, Stevenson improved her record to 7-3-1 and recorded her fourth shutout of the season and 10th of her career.
  • Violette's recorded her 10th goal and 12th goal of the season and now leads the team with 22 points.
