Crusaders Post 74-73 Win Over Lafayette

  • The Lead: Senior guard Justin Burrell (Dumfries, Va.) drove to the basket for a layup with 6.8 seconds remaining, to lift the Holy Cross men's basketball team to a 74-73 victory over Lafayette at the Hart Center.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Burrell finished the night with seven points, a career-high 10 assists and no turnovers.
  • Sophomore forward Malachi Alexander (Bowie, Md.) led Holy Cross with 17 points and four rebounds.
  • Senior forward Malcolm Miller (Laytonsville, Md.) also played well, finishing with 13 points and three rebounds.
  • The Leopards were led by Dan Trist with 18 points and eight boards, while Seth Hinrichs added 14 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five blocks.
  • Holy Cross made 49.2 percent of its field goal attempts (30 of 61) on the night, while committing only six turnovers.
  • Lafayette was able to make 50.9 percent of its shots from the floor (27 of 53) and 63.2 percent of its three-pointers (12 of 19) in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game was close throughout a first half which featured five ties and eight lead changes.
  • Lafayette opened the game by making its first five shots, while jumping out to an early 12-8 lead.
  • The Leopards were later up by five (18-13), before the Crusaders scored seven straight points to pull ahead.
  • Holy Cross went on to take a five-point lead late in the half, and eventually held a 45-42 advantage heading into the locker room.
  • A three-point by Alexander early in the second half gave the Crusaders their largest lead of the night (48-42), but Lafayette quickly responded with a 9-2 run to pull back in front.
  • The score would then stay close for several minutes, and Holy Cross would later lead 63-61 with 9:16 left to play.
  • A 10-2 run by the Leopards gave them their biggest lead of the game (71-65) with five minutes remaining, but Lafayette would not make another field goal for the remainder of the night.
  • The Crusaders scored the next seven points, and took a 72-71 lead a three-point play by freshman forward Mitchell Hahn (Fremont, Neb.) with 50.3 seconds left.
  • The Leopards regained the lead (73-72) on two free throws by Nick Lindner with 22.1 seconds remaining, before Burrell's layup gave Holy Cross the lead for good.
  • A three-point attempt by Hinrichs was then off the mark at the final buzzer, giving the Crusaders the victory.
