Men's Basketball Edged By Army In Overtime 72-70

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Freshman forward Mitchell Hahn (Fremont, Neb.) totaled 18 points, seven rebounds, five blocked shots and three assists, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Army 72-70 in overtime at the Hart Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Black Knights led by 13 points (44-31) with 14:38 remaining in the second half, before Holy Cross went on a 7-0 run to get back into the game.
  • Army was still up by six (55-49) with 6:14 left to play, before the Crusaders used a 10-1 spurt to claim their first lead of the night.
  • A three-point play by sophomore forward Malachi Alexander (Bowie, Md.) put Holy Cross up 57-56 with 3:42 left, then Hahn drained two free throws with 2:59 on the clock to make the score 59-56.
  • Tanner Plomb would knock down a three-pointer for the Black Knights with 1:36 remaining to tie it up at 59-59, and neither team would score again in regulation as the game went to overtime.
  • After Army scored five straight points to build a 69-65 advantage in the extra session, Hahn knocked down a three-pointer with 25.3 seconds left to pull the Crusaders within one.
  • The Black Knights' Kyle Wilson then hit one-of-two free throws, before junior guard Cullen Hamilton (Washington, D.C.) drove the lane for a layup with 7.4 seconds remaining to tie the game at 70-70.
  • But Army's Dylan Cox then took the ball the length of the court and hit a layup with 1.9 seconds left to give the Black Knights the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Both teams struggled to shoot the ball, as Holy Cross hit 36.2 percent of its field goal attempts (21 of 58) and Army made 38.7 percent of its shots from the floor.
  • But the Black Knights were able to connect on 10 of 23 attempts from three-point range (43.5 percent), with the Crusaders making only four of 15 shots from behind the arc (26.7 percent).
  • Army also held a 42-36 rebounding advantage on the night.
  • Hamilton finished the game with 14 points, three rebounds and two assists, while Alexander added 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Plomb led Army with 18 points, seven rebounds and five steals, with Wilson posting 22 points, five rebounds and four assists.
