Women's Hockey Edged By Colby, 4-3

THE BASICS

Location: Alfond Arena (Waterville, Maine) 
The Lead: Freshman Kara Violette (Biddeford, Maine), senior Mary Klimasewiski (Conchester, Conn.) and sophomore Isabela Bagi (Branford, Conn.) all scored for the Crusaders as the Holy Cross women's hockey team was edged out 4-3 by Colby on Tuesday night at Alfond Arena. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Holy Cross jumped out to a quick start just 41 seconds into the game as Violette slipped her ninth goal of the season past Colby goalie Jessica Thulin to give the Crusaders an early 1-0 lead, with the assists credited to junior captain Taylor McGee (Pearl River, N.Y.) and junior Mackenzie Boardman (Anchorage, Alaska). 
  • It did not take long for Colby to answer as Maddie Dewhirst got the puck past senior goalie Krista Manzanares (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) to even the score 1-1 and was assisted by Katie Tang (2:34). 
  • The Mules tacked on another goal before the end of the first period on a goal by Breanna Davis, assisted by Kailey Buxbaum, to put Colby on top 2-1 with nine minutes remaining (9:09). 
  • The Crusaders tied the game for the second time at 2-2 on an unassisted goal by Klimasewiski, her eighth of the season, ten minutes into the second stanza (9:55). 
  • Despite being outshot 22-11 in the second, Colby was able to register two more goals in the period. 
  • Colby's Megan Fortier scored the go-ahead goal for the Mules giving them the one goal advantage at 3-2 and was assisted by Lauren Guarente (14:52). 
  • The Mules took their second and final lead of the game with 42 seconds remaining in the second on an unassisted goal by Tang to put Colby up 4-2 (19:18)
  • Bagi gave Holy Cross  life midway through the third period as she was able to get the puck past Thulin on an unassisted goal to cut Colby's lead to one (15:31) at 4-3.
  • Manzanares exited the game with 1:08 remaining in regulation, but Colby was unable to score again as the Mules took the 4-3 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Manzanares had 28 saves for the Crusaders, while Thulin had 53 saves for the Mules. 
  • Holy Cross held the advantage in shots on goal (56-32). 
  • Colby went 0-0 in power-play opportunities as Holy Cross went 0-1. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • Boardman has tallied six points through last the last three games and now has nine points, matching her overall point total from last season. 
  • Violette's goal was her team-leading ninth goal of the season. 
  • Manzanares recorded her second 20+ save game of the year.

  • The Crusaders return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 17 as they play host to conference opponent New England College for a 2:05 p.m. start.
