Crusaders Edged By Boston University In Overtime

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Senior forward Malcolm Miller (Laytonsville, Md.) scored a career-high 21 points, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Boston University 75-72 in overtime at the Hart Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Terriers led 50-45 with 14:10 remaining in the second half, before Holy Cross went on an 11-0 run over the next 4:41 to claim a 56-50 lead.
  • The Crusaders were still up by five (64-59) with 3:26 left on the clock, but were outscored 5-0 for the remainder of regulation and the game went to overtime.
  • Boston University would lead by three (71-68) with 2:34 to go in the extra session, before a layup by junior guard Eric Green (Mountain House, Calif.) and a pair of free throws from senior forward Taylor Abt (Darnestown, Md.) put Holy Cross up 72-71 with 1:01 remaining.
  • But a Justin Alston hit a layup to put the Terriers back in front, then hit one-of-two free throws with 9.3 seconds left to make the score 74-72.
  • The Crusaders were unable to score on their last possession in the closing seconds, before John Papale hit a one-of-two free throws  for Boston University with 0.5 seconds on the clock to conclude the scoring.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Boston University hit 60.9 percent of its field goal attempts on the day (28 of 46), while holding the Crusaders to just 36.9 percent shooting (31 of 84).
  • The Terriers also made 13 of 19 free throws in the game, with Holy Cross making just four of five foul shots.
  • The Crusaders were able to stay in the game by committing only two turnovers to 20 for Boston University, in addition to pulling down a season-high 19 offensive rebounds.
  • Green finished the game with 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals, while sophomore forward Malachi Alexander (Bowie, Md.) added 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
  • The Terriers were led by Alston with 17 points and eight rebounds, with Cedric Hankerson adding 17 points and six rebounds.
