Men's Basketball Falls 67-48 At Canisius

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Canisius guard Zach Lewis totaled 16 points, seven steals, five assists and three rebounds, to lead the Golden Griffins to a 67-48 victory over the Holy Cross men's basketball team at the Koessler Athletic Center.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Canisius hit 43.6 percent of its field goal attempts (24 of 55), 44.4 percent of its three-pointers (eight of 18) and 91.7 percent of its free throws (11 of 12) on the day.
  • The Crusaders were only able to connect on 38.3 percent of their shots from the floor (18 of 47), 30.0 percent of their three-pointers (six of 20) and 54.4 percent at the charity stripe (six of 11).
  • Holy Cross also had a season-high 19 turnovers, while being outrebounded 36-25.
  • Junior guard Cullen Hamilton (Washington, D.C.) led the Crusaders with 10 points.
  • Senior guard Justin Burrell (Dumfries, Va.) added nine points and two assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After the Crusaders scored the opening basket of the game, the Golden Griffins ran off 12 straight points to claim an early 12-2.
  • Holy Cross responded with a 9-2 run a few minutes later, and trailed by just one point (19-18) with 2:51 left in the first half.
  • Canisius would then close out the half with a 5-0 spurt, to take a 24-18 advantage into the locker room.
  • The Crusaders trimmed the margin down to three points (26-23) early in the second half, before the Golden Griffins scored seven straight points to go back up by 10 (33-23).
  • A quick 8-0 Holy Cross run would then make it a two-point game (33-31) with 13:08 remaining in regulation.
  • But Canisius came right back with a 17-1 spurt over the next four minutes to increase its lead to 18 (50-32) and put the game away.
  • The Golden Griffins would lead by as many as 25 points in the closing minutes, before finally winning by 19.
