Women's Basketball Falls Late To Quinnipiac, 74-67

  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) registered a double-double with a game-high 24 points to go along with 11 rebounds, but the Crusaders were defeated by Quinnipiac, 74-67, in non-conference women's basketball action on Monday evening at the Purcell Pavilion. The contest was the second round of the Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Challenge.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders grabbed the early 10-4 lead (16:30) on the back of an old-fashioned three-point play by junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.). The Bobcats rallied back with a 7-0 surge to gain the 11-10 edge (14:19), but a pair of free throws by Mifsud after a Quinnipiac technical foul gave the Crusaders the 12-11 lead (13:27).
  • Holy Cross went up by four points on two occasions over the next seven minutes, but Quinnipiac would tie the game at 19-19 at the 6:02-mark of the first half.
  • With the score knotted at 21-21 (4:58), Holy Cross ended the half on a 13-0 run to head into the locker room with the 34-21 lead. Mifsud and Scott each had four points apiece during the half-ending run.
  • The Crusaders kept the 13-point lead (36-23) with 18:51 on the clock in the second half, before the Bobcats scored seven quick points to cut the deficit to 36-30 (17:29). A three-pointer by freshman guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) put Holy Cross back up by nine points (39-30), but Quinnipiac used a 7-2 spurt to make the score 41-37 (15:55).
  • Holy Cross went on a 7-0 rally to gain the 11-point lead (48-37) on the back of a Mifsud three-pointer at the 14:26-mark of the second half.
  • The Crusaders went up by 12 points (53-41), but Quinnipiac rallied with a 15-3 run over the next 3:33 to tie the game at 56-56 with 9:24 to go in the second half. The teams traded baskets to make the score 58-58 (6:41), but Quinnipiac went on a 10-2 surge to gain the 68-60 lead with 1:46 left in the half.
  • Holy Cross brought the deficit to three points (70-67) with 22 seconds on the clock, but Quinnipiac closed the game 4-of-4 from the free-throw line to claim the 74-67 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • In addition to Scott for Holy Cross, Mifsud recorded 17 points, six rebounds and four assists, while senior forward Emily Parker (Johnston, Iowa) totaled six points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Doherty scored a career-best 10 points to go along with five rebounds. 
  • The Bobcats were led by Van Driscoll, who tallied 20 points and a game-best 15 rebounds, while Jasmine Martin posted 19 points and four boards.
  • Holy Cross shot 37.1 percent from the field (26-70), while Quinnipiac connected on 26-of-78 from the floor (33.3%).
  • The Crusaders hit 27.3 percent from behind the arc (6-22), while they limited the Bobcats to 6-of-28 from downtown (21.4%).
  • Holy Cross held the advantage in total rebounds (57-46) and second chance points (17-12), while Quinnipiac led in points in the paint (38-30) and points off turnovers (29-7). The Bobcats forced 24 Holy Cross turnovers, while only committing 11.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Scott's double-double was the 20th of her career and she recorded a career-best four steals.
  • Parker tied a career-high with 12 rebounds.
