Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Colby, 3-1

WATERVILLE, Maine – Freshman Kati Goguen (Acton, Mass.) scored her third and fourth goals of the season to lift the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team over non-conference foe Colby on the road Tuesday evening by a score of 3-1. With the victory, the Crusaders improve to 10-4-1 on the season, while the Mules are now 5-9-0.

After a scoreless first period, sophomore Nicole Giannino (Bay Shore, N.Y.) finally got the Crusaders on the board with 8:15 remaining in the second period, burying a rebound off a shot from senior Alex Campione (Townsend, Mass.). Holy Cross outshot Colby 11-7 in the middle frame and took a 1-0 lead into the third period on the seventh goal of the season for Giannino.

After a Colby penalty with just under 15 minutes remaining in the game, Goguen wasted no time scoring the eventual game-winning goal just seven seconds into the power play. The freshman deflected a shot from the point as sophomores Rebecca Fleming (Newton, Mass.) and Francesca Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) were credited with the assists on the play. Goguen's second goal of the game came just over three minutes later, once again on the power play, when she received  a pass from Panarelli and fired a shot from just inside the blue line that found its way to the back of the net. With the score 3-0, Holy Cross, Mules junior Annie Papadellis got Colby on the board with 8:45 remaining, but it was not enough as the Crusaders skated away with the 3-1 triumph.

Crusader sophomore goaltender Alexandra Stevenson (Norwood, N.Y.) made seven saves in each period for a total of 21 in the game and improves to 4-2-1 on the season. Colby netminder Brianne Wheeler made 25 saves and is now 5-9-0. Holy Cross outshot the Mules 28-22 in the game.

The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team will return to the Hart Center for the first time in 2013 on Friday, Jan. 18, hosting Castleton State for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
