Women's Ice Hockey Earns 5-2 Victory Over St. Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore forward Rebecca Fleming (Newton, Mass.) scored two goals and added one assist for three points as the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team defeated St. Anselm in a rematch of the 2011-2012 ECAC Open Championship on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Arena, 5-2. The Crusaders and the Hawks are now both 3-1-1 (2-1-1 ECAC East) on the season.

The Crusaders took the lead 8:28 into the first period when sophomore Mary Klimasewiski (Cochester, Conn.) scored off passes from Alex Campione (Townsend, Mass.) and Nicole Giannino (Bay Shore, N.Y.). After a St. Anselm penalty 1:35 into the second period, Fleming netted her fist power play goal of the season with help from sophomore Francesca Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and senior Caroline English (Dorchester, Mass.). The Hawks answered just 44 seconds later when Kathryn Picarello scored her second goal of the season to make the score 2-1.

Senior Rebecca O'Quinn (Arlington, Mass.) beat St. Anselm goaltender Lindsey Brown for the game-winning goal with 10:45 remaining in the second period. Freshman Kati Goguen (Acton, Mass.) and Fleming added assists on the tally to make the score 3-1. Picarello beat sophomore Holy Cross goaltender Krista Manzanares (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) for her second goal of the game with 9:01 remaining in the period but it would not be enough for the Hawks. The Crusaders added two more goal in the second frame for the 5-2 victory. Sophomore Chelsea Monahan (Cherry Hill, N.J.) tallied her first goal of the season with 7:07 and Fleming added her second power play goal of the game with 36 seconds remaining in the period.

After a second stanza that saw a combined 31 shots, there were only nine shots total in the scoreless third period. Manzanares recorded the win, stopping 30 shots, and is now 3-0-0 on the season. Brown (2-1-1) suffered the loss for the Hawks, making 17 saves in just under 33 minutes of action. Janice Michaud finished the game and made four saves. Nine different Crusaders recorded points in the victory.

The women's ice hockey team will return to the Hart Center on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 11-17, for ECAC East conference action against Manhattanville and Nichols. The Crusaders will face Manhattanville on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Nichols on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
