Holy Cross Women's Ice Hockey Defeats St. Michael's, 5-1

WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) scored two goals as the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team defeated St. Michael's, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 23-2-1 (17-2-1 ECAC) and advance to the ECAC Open Championship while the Purple Knights fall to 6-17-1 (4-14-3 ECAC).

The Crusaders took the first 10 minutes of the first period to warm up, but then got hot, scoring three goals in three minutes. Senior forward Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, Ill.) got Holy Cross on the board with her 15th goal of the season at the 13:34 mark. Couzin received a pass from freshman Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) in the slot to score the goal. Junior Kathryn Kelley (Dedham, Mass.) scored at the 13:59 mark to put the Crusaders up, 2-0, while Kratchmer found the back of the net at the 15:50 mark to score her 21st goal of the season and send the Crusaders to the locker room with the 3-0 lead.

Kratchmer led off the second period with a quick goal, just 16 seconds into the period. Holy Cross won the face off and Kratchmer put the puck in the bottom left corner of the net to give the Crusaders the 4-0 lead. Junior Wendy Nobrega (Barrington, R.I.) scored from in the slot at the 4:55 mark to put Holy Cross up 5-0. St. Michael's responded when Emily Paquin scored the power play goal at the 6:46 mark to make the score 5-1.

The puck traveled up and down the ice, but never found the back of the net in the third period. Neither Holy Cross nor St. Michael's scored, ending the game in favor of the Crusaders, 5-1.

Sophomore Lindsay Atkinson (Westbank, British Columbia) made the start in net for the Crusaders, earning her 10th win of the season and improving to 10-0-0. Alysia Goldman guarded the goal for St. Michael's, falling to 5-15-3. Atkinson made 15 saves on 16 St. Michael's shots, while Goldman made 28 saves on 33 Holy Cross shots. The Crusaders went 0-3 on the power play opportunity, while St. Michael's went 1-5.

With the victory, the Crusaders advance to the Championship round of the ECAC Open, taking on Sacred Heart on Sunday, March 1 at the Hart Center at 4:00 p.m. St. Michael's will play St. Anselm at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation game.
