WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team fell 5-2 on Saturday afternoon to Saint Anselm in the ECAC Open semifinals. The Crusaders will play in the consolation game of the tournament tommorrow.
The Crusaders could not overcome a dominating offensive performance by Hawk forward Kathleen Twomey. Twomey scored the first two goals of the game to put Saint Anselm up 2-0 in the first period. Her first goal was only 10 seconds into the game. The next would come at the 15:49 mark.
Twomey would go on to scored two more goals, one in the second period and another in the third.
Holy Cross would quickly would cut the first period deficit in half when sophomore Sam Murphy (Canton, Mass.) netted a goal just 14 seconds after the Crusaders fell down 2-0.
With 59 seconds left to go in the first frame, sophomore Katherine Falkowski (East Sandwich, Mass.) would even the scored 2-2 after assisting on the first Crusader goal along with sophomore Casey Harvell (Lexington, Mass.)
The Hawks would go on to net the last three goals of the game, including two in the last frame. Twomey would score at the 8:03 mark in the second and 11:25 mark of the third.
Samantha Rowe tallied three assists on the afternoon for Saint Anselm.
Crusader goalie Casey McCullion (Philadelphia, Pa.) stopped 38 shots on the game and her counterpart Andrea Berlin made 21 saves in the win.
Holy Cross will play at 4:00 p.m. tommorrow at the Hart Center in the consolation game agains the loser of the Sacred Heart and Saint Michael's game tonight at 7:00 p.m. Saint Anselm will take on the winner in the championship game tommorrow at 7:00 p.m.
