Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team (5-5-1, 5-3-0 ECAC) started off the second half of their season with a convincing 5-2 over Southern Maine (3-10-0, 3-6-0 ECAC). Senior captain Sarah Wetherbee (Canton, Mass.) led the Crusaders with two goals as freshman goaltender Jennifer Van Dongen (Calgary, Alberta) picked up her third win of the season.

Sophomore Katherine Falkowski (East Sandwich, Mass.) got the scoring started by stealing a pass and skating in unassisted just under four minutes into the game. The Crusader would increase their lead to 2-0 on a goal by freshman Amy McGhee (Newtown, Pa.). McGhee's goal was assisted by sophomores Sam Rush (Wakefield, Mass.) and Meghan Donovan (Reading, Mass.).

The Huskies would cut into the Crusader lead when sophomore Amy McNally (East Waterboro, Maine) scored during a scramble in front of the net. Just over 14 minutes into the second period, senior captain Kolt Bloxson (Fitchburg, Mass.) would knock home what proved to be the game winning goal when she flipped a loose puck past Southern Maine goalie Jen Arno (Westford, Mass.).

Southern Maine would score another goal just under four minutes later but it would not be enough. Wetherbee's two scores with 1:45 left in the second and 19:16 in the third period would push the Holy Cross lead back to 5-2.

The Crusader women will host conference opponent UMass-Boston tomorrow, January 7 at the Hart Center. The puck will drop at 2:00 p.m.
