Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team (7-8-1, 7-4-0 ECAC) defeated Castleton State (5-13-0, 2-12-0) by a score of 10-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center. The Crusaders ran their unbeaten streak to three games with the victory.
Holy Cross got off to a quick start when sophomore Katherine Falkowski (East Sandwich, Mass.) put back a rebound past goalie Vanessa Carter (Summerstown, Ontario) at the 15:02 mark.
Just under two minutes later, senior Kate Remsberg (Arlington, Mass) added another Crusader score off a pass from sophomore Sam Rush (Wakefield, Mass.). Sophomore Sam Murphy (Canton, Mass.) would add a breakaway goal with 4:08 left in the period.
In just the second, senior Sarah Wetherbee (Canton, Mass) would complete a hat trick with three goals at the 4:31, 5:21, and 15:30 marks. Falkowski would add another goal to help Holy Cross build the lead to 7-0.
Junior goalie Dianna Muth (Lee, N.H.) made her second appearance in net this season as she took over for freshman Jennifer Van Dongen (Calgary, Alberta) after the first two periods. Van Dongen made eight saves during her stint. Muth was able to make 10 saves, a personal record, in just the third period.
The Crusaders would increase the final margin to 10-0 on third period goals by Rush, Christine O'Hara (Burnsville, Minn.) and Kolt Bloxson (Fitchburg, Mass.). O'Hara's goal was her first of the season.
Sam Rush and Meghan Donovan (Reading, Mass.) each had four points for the Crusaders.
Spartan goalie Vanessa Carter made 53 total saves on the afternoon. Van Dongen and Muth combined to stop 18 shots. Both teams failed to convert any power play chances, going a combined 0-7.
The Holy Cross women play again on Friday, January 27 when they travel to play conference foe New England College in Henniker, N.H. The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m.
