Castleton, Vt. - Senior captain Sarah Wetherbee (Canton, Mass.) netted a first period goal to become the all-time leader in points at Holy Cross (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC) with 107 as the Crusader women won their season opener, 3-2. Holy Cross more than doubled Castleton State (0-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC) in shots, 53-21, in the contest.

Junior Melissa Flanagan (Manchester Center, Vt.) scored what proved to be the game winner with 16:20 left in the third frame to put the Crusaders up 3-1. Freshman Amy McGhee (Newtown, Pa.) picked up her first career assist on the goal. Sophomore Lauren Oplinger (Summit, N.J.) also assisted on the play.

Castleton St. got the scoring started just over six minutes into the game when freshman Jenn Saitta netted the first of her two goals in the contest. She would later add a goal with 3:25 left in the game. Holy Cross would tie the score 1-1 just over two minutes after Saitta's first on a goal by sophomore Casey Harvell (Lexington, Mass.) that was set up by sophomores Katherine Falkowski (East Sandwich, Mass.) and Sam Murphy (Canton, Mass.).

Wetherbee's first period goal was assisted by fellow senior captains Kolt Bloxson (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Kate Remsberg (Arlington, Mass.) with under three minutes left in the first period. The Crusader's took the lead 2-1 and held it for the rest of the game.

Crusader freshman Jennifer Van Dongen (Calgary, Alberta) locked down the victory between the pipes in her first collegiate start, making 17 saves. Spartan sophomore goalie Vanessa Carter kept Castleton St. in the game by turning away 50 shots on the night.

Holy Cross will turn around and play Saturday, Nov. 5 at St. Michael's College at 3:00 p.m.
