Senior Katie Guden of the Holy Cross field hockey team has been chosen as the Hilton Garden Inn Crusader of the Week for August 21 - August 27.
Guden scored the game winning goal in Friday's home opener against Stonehill on Friday afternoon. After a game-saving save by netminder Brooke Ross on a penalty stroke, the Crusaders marched the ball down to their offensive end of the field, drawing three-straight corner opportunities. After two strong attempts, sophomore Megan Schienbein sent the insert to senior Allie McDonough's stick stop at the top of the circle, where she bumped the ball to her left finding Guden set up for a short stick shot. Guden's strike traveled through the legs of Stonehill's goalkeeper to end the game with 6:58 remaining in the second extra frame.
In the second quarter, Guden recorded a defensive save on a rebound attempt by a Stonehill forward, preventing a goal by the Skyhawks that would have won the game in regulation.
Holy Cross (1-0, 0-0 PL) will continue their 2023 campaign on Friday, September 1 when they travel to Dedham, Mass. to face Northeastern University. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
